Originally known as Virgin Cruises, the company was rebranded to Virgin Voyages in 2016 to better reflect its modern, oceanic spirit. After several years of planning and construction, the line officially debuted in August 2021 with its first ship, Scarlet Lady, following pandemic-related delays. From the outset, Virgin Voyages positioned itself as a bold disruptor in the cruise industry, offering an adults-only, design-forward alternative to traditional cruising, aimed at the younger, experience-driven traveller.
The brand operates a fleet of four mid-sized, boutique-style ships: Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady, and the soon-to-launch Brilliant Lady. Each ship carries around 2,700 guests and offers a sleek, yacht-like atmosphere. Virgin Voyages does away with traditional cruise norms like buffets and main dining rooms, instead offering over 20 included dining venues created with input from Michelin-starred chefs. The cruise fare is refreshingly inclusive, covering Wi-Fi, tips, basic drinks, group fitness classes, and entertainment. Virgin’s onshore experiences, called "Shore Things," are thoughtfully curated with a focus on local immersion and guaranteed return-to-ship assurances. Onboard, guests enjoy a tech-savvy experience with wearable devices, app-based services, and theatrical, immersive entertainment. The cruise line is also known for themed events like Scarlet Night and drag brunches, adding to its signature playful vibe.
As of 2025, Virgin Voyages continues to expand. Brilliant Lady, set to debut in September 2025, will be the line’s first ship capable of transiting the Panama Canal, opening up new routes to Alaska and the U.S. West Coast. New destinations like Bordeaux and Bilbao have been added, and entertainment continues to evolve with offerings like the LOLz Supper Club. Technological upgrades include faster satellite internet through Starlink and SES, and the introduction of a luxury Annual Pass worth nearly $200,000 signals the brand’s focus on ultra-premium experiences.
